Programs to pave the future

Caution: Brainstorm is coming
 Brainstorm Collector

Through reflection, a society will find its problem. Problem is like garbage. To solve the problem, a society needs to recycle its garbage. To rectify its problem, it has to recast it and refine the pure cause out of its problem and then reserve it. Through research, a society can reinvent a  problem. Using the pure cause as the resource, a society can recreate problem counter the problem. in the other word, a solution. A solution will revive from the problem and represent itself back to the society with respect. Then a society will have a revolution

To achieve this goal, a society have to build a brainstorm collector. A storm is formed by the encounter of high pressure and low pressure. A person can have a vision that he won't necessary achieve, but his vision is still there, hovering. Without the eager, a vision is an abstract. Eager is the like the high pressure and vision is like a low pressure. When vision and eager meet, there will be a brainstorm. It is consequential of where the brainstorm hits. If the brainstorm hits a weak ground of the society, it will cause the social landslide. If a society has a system to respond the brainstorm, it can prevent the social landslide. If a society has a system to harvest the brainstorm, it will flourish.

Program tryout

Program I

Program II Left: Farms; Right:  Factory

The Factory as the Solution of the Future

Recycle Plant

The garbage is the reflection to its society.
The garbage is the sinner for its lost purpose in life. It is left from the people. Its body will not just die but decay in landfill. Many of them will not rest in peace, because they are spelled to live in hell on earth and forever forgotten by the world.

I envision a cathedral of the unwanted. Sinners, the garbage, can go there for their salvation. They will gather in this monumental structure, the nave of the garbage. They will confess to the recycle workers who learn to distinguish the materials from the unwanted. Those workers are the local people whoever want to learn or work, and they are trained from the recycling workshop, the monastery. The garbage will be deconstructed into pieces and categorized into different zones as the confession rooms. In the smelter hall, they will go to a series of processes to purify themselves. Eventually they will be baptized and restore to their pure and materialistic forms. Through the factory, the unwanted will regain a new purpose of life.

Through the stage of redemption purification and resurrection of the garbage, people around are inspired by the miracle work of recycle program. They will not be able to despise the miracle workers if not respect them. Some might be aspired to want to work there. And those who do not work there, will be more active in their individual recycle program, or start to control their consumption and waste. After all, people pay to enjoy the goods from the factory. They must have some extend of understanding what they are made out of. It is a strong statement by putting the recycle plant as part of the factory. As Christians said the good miracle that Jesus turns water into wine, this factory will turn garbage into the tools we need to better our lives. I believe that is the parallel in all religions. People can participate the belief, solution to problems and making the life better, in different scales and forms. The statement and hope from this monument will aspire people to pursue its mission regardless of who they are and wherever they are in the city and beyond.

Laboratory

The laboratory will stimulate creativities. Along with the monumentality of the building, the inventors will be very aware of their decisions. Unlike the office building where people can hide thing easier with paper, the inventions will reflect the minds from their inventors. That working dynamic will bring the user and the creator closer. Inventors just need to pick between respect or disregard.

Shaft/Server and the Production Hall/Served

This factory needs big and flexible space for its intensive piping and expansion. In order to have uninterrupted space for the industrial installation, it needs the dedicated space as server. Essentially this server space is the vein of this factory, so I envision series shaft spaces within the spaces of the mega structure. The mega structure and the pipeline will be exposed like the monumental columns of the classical temple to draw the respect to the activities within it.

Relaxation Space

Relaxation is necessary for workers. The space that can offer the city view from the height will give the worker dignity and remind their duty because of attached statement as the presence of the factory itself.

Pollution Chambers

Factory makes pollutions. That is the major reason why people don’t want to live around it. In order to challenge that perception, we can create methods to deposit it in the chamber so it doesn’t contaminate the air. When the polluted air is less active in the chamber space, we can analyze the chemical compound in that air, and apply the chemical to collect it. Scientist might actually use the alchemy to harvest the molecule for possible usage. Of course, it wouldn’t be as ideal as above, because some industries’ pollutions are too heavy. But through careful selection of the industries, we can find out which industries are appropriate in this intent. Eventually, the selected industries will create more goods that people trust and rely on, and eventually evolve whereas the industries with heavy pollution will decline and become history.

Convention Hall

To transform the consumerism world is not just eliminate consumer activity, but to transform the way people consume. The convention hall and product exhibition area are important to bring people. People can be inspired by the innovative goods, whether they buy it or not. People will unintentionally turn their shopper’s hype into the passion of the environmental couscous practice. That will create the dignity and confidence among those who work there.

High-rise Argitecture as the Framework of Future

A Symbol to Celebrate the Work of Nature

Along with the industry, I want to bring agriculture back to the city in the high-rises. I propose one monumental high-rise farming structure that elevates the respect of nature and food production. This Agritecture might not be cost-effective in the short term of production, but its presence will bring the people of the city one step closer to the food source that serves as the symbol to reach a larger audience. People will elevate their respect of food when they enjoy the work of nature in vegetables and live stocks, even if this awareness might cause some people to become vegetarians. Those who choose to eat meat will hold an appreciation and a consciousness in consuming, similar to the ancient time where people would pray before sacrificing a lamb. People who realize their survival dependence on the sacrifice of others will use more conscious methods to preserve and cook, and push the potential of the food source to their limit. Through this monumental high-rise farming structure, the food will gain the respect from people regardless of its source. Simultaneously, citizens of the city will be aware of what is happening away from city from worshipping the presence of this iconic farming space.

A Facadeless and Programless Skeleton

The open space of this framework will be flexible to configurations. That means the program will adjust to its condition. The farming space will create a better condition for the inhabited space while the occupants can always live to see the ideal spot to inhabit and build. Every floor on this framework is a site itself. Imagine the building structure with the strength of the elevated highway to handle the force of the trucks or trains. People can plot their dwellings on the structures as if they do it on the ground. It will invent a new dynamic on the faces of the city streets. As the emerging of high-rise buildings, this high-rise farming will eventually lose its sunlight to its others. It is ok if this high-rise farming loses its ability to produce food. Hopefully the next of its kind will carry the responsibility from it. The shaded space might become an ideal space to inhabit and invite other types of infrastructure or dwelling to plot. Possibly, people will bridge both new and old buildings if the new building shares the same characteristics of the framework of my proposal. People can capture the characteristics of the street level and recreate it off the ground. Imagine such framework generate into a much bigger scale. People might as well think of a transportation system to go with that framework. After all, it is easier to build an elevated railway than digging for the subway. This set of framework will redefine the urban typology in terms of the street level and subway. We might one day see the trains weaving through the skylines of the city like how the visionaries from the early 20th century envisioned the future city to be. As the ancient civilization always start with source of food to establish a village before it become a city, these high-rise frameworks will serve as the food production first, and then they will establish a new typology for future developments. The facadeless and programless skeleton can constantly reshape its appearance and purpose to the generations to come. Instead of digging a tunnel or build a village in the mountain, we build the mountain.

Topic Map II

Decision St and Mentality Ave

There are things that we have to go through. Do we question ourselves what to do with them or do them as everybody does?

The Topic map in words is to show the two sides of patterns, one though reality, another one through possibility. The pattern through reality is regressive. The pattern through possibility is progressive. Eventually, human mind will respond to their experience. there is a consequence to everything we do. We might want to foresee what is to come from our decisions. The visual abstract I made here is to show the parallel between reality and possibility. People will walk through the street of decision. After every decision they make, they will have to deal with their own consequence. In the end they will all come to the avenue of mentality. After all, people can't escape from their own minds. To change the way our minds look at ourselves, we need to walk back to the block of possibility and then stay on progress.

Culture as solution

Dignity in what we do than how we look

Goal

Goal is a vision to keep me moving, and make my existence evident. Without any goal, I would drift into many obsessions, eventually a life without myself.

Goal
So....
What is my goal?

Peace:A quote from the movie, "Rent"," the opposite of the war is not peace, is Creation". I find it quite agreeable. People who enjoy the constructive life would not enjoy destruction. After all, we are not born to give up our passion. Peace is just a state of mind. Peace can't be defined by material mean.

Paradox

harmony of freedom and security, dual existence, paradox
A symbol to stimulate its landscape

a life of creation, an environment for the creative
a vibrant life, a place to celebrate life
a place to transform the greed from materialistic into spiritual
a place to transform the environmental burden into the solution of tomorrow
a place people can find themselves.
a place free for thought

a place to appreciate life

State of Mind in New Dimension

The curiosity to keep me fresh
The challenge to keep me evolving
The spirit to keep me dreaming

Time and Space for imagination and solution

Sustainability

Push yourself beyond the five senses, the sixth will come.
Spirituality through Physical Challenge

Magic resides in observation and imagination.

Music as Space

Music: Although not the most important thing in my life, it has been always an accessible experience nearly everywhere, a psychological tool to deliver myself to different moods through melodious journey. Music is like architectures and places for different sensitivity. Every sensitivity leads to brain.

Thesis so far

Architecture is the trace of the society, but the hand behind the pen is what decides the next step of society. It is the architect who constructs the sentence that carries the audiences to his message. Ultimately through the message written in architecture, architects can influence the society and the environment according to their visions.

Today our environment has been built on the interest of the capitalism. As the result, architecture becomes the media to lead the mass society into consumptive mechanism. People know the world’s resources will be exhausted by their lifestyle. Still many of them find reasons to walk away from the issue. Why?

Because the mass media tell the society that the happiness resides in the materialistic means. Therefore architects are hired to build better and bigger shopping malls to manifest the consumer’s society.

Because the society is programmed to believe that more money can make a better life. Therefore people become the believers in the majestic presence of the financial buildings, the temple of the capitalists.

Architects have become the church builders of consumerism and capitalism.

I want to change the perception of society toward the labor workers, by remaking a factory into a dignified environment. People will shift their respect to the people who really produce the necessary goods instead of people who base their individual gains on others’ losses or ones who spend lots of money on the fashion that doesn’t last. Through an iconic and monumental presence, the factory of my proposal will stimulate thoughts of people in both positive way and negative way. People will be very aware of what the factory is producing as well as any pollution concerns. Either industry will have to create a solution to treat the pollution or create new methods of production. As a speculation of my proposal, such manufacturers will be monitored, stimulated, and forced to evolve as its transformation from the negative perception to the positive inspiration. The society will gain the awareness of its issue and the hope in its solution.

Therefore, I want to use architecture as the threshold to the future by reinventing the labor environment and redefining the roles of the industry and agriculture of the present.

Passage of Time

Passage of Time

Section Collage(Pyramid of Consumer's Civilization)
Hand drawn section of collage (Pyramid of 21st Century)
The idea in this set of collages is to be found the parallel of the reality and the visual implication in the top collage. The first collage eventually evolves into the form of pyramid. Then I found the irony in the idea of pyramid that it means social class or nutrition systems. As my intended subject to explore the possibility to fix the consumer society, I decide to interoperate this as the pyramid of the consumer's civilization in contrast the initial idea of Egyptian pyramid. The Egyptian pyramid was meant for the stair to the heaven. Escalator is the modern version of the stair, a stair of convenience. The consumer's pyramid is consume the world until the end where there is nothing as on the top of its pyramid. On the bottom image, it is a pyramid with a well of trash or sense of irony.

Boundary

Boundary
Section of Boundry

 Section in hand drawing
This set of collages is to explore the meaning of boundary. As my analysis of architecture by Morphosis, the secondary skin can be used for more linguistic mean. There is dynamic relationship between exposed glass and the secondary skin. Therefore, architecture by Morphosis can be seen as a concrete body, glass skin, and metallic dress.
